NBA 2k21: Next-gen Review

The next-gen version of NBA 2K21 has been available for almost a month now and we had the opportunity to try it through and fro. 2K Games and Visual concepts had promised a better, bigger, faster and more beautiful game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox series S/X. Did they deliver on their promise? This article will give you our honest review of NBA 2K21 on next-gen consoles.

For starters, let us start with a bad point for next-gen NBA 2K21. There is no feature like the dual entitlement for EA games that launched this year. Even if you own a copy of the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, you will have to buy it again at a higher price. We already knew that 2K games had taken that decision but having to pay twice for the same game feels a little hard to swallow even if you are a big fan of the franchise. That “minor” detail aside let us talk about the game proper, is it worth its price?

When 2K games released NBA 2K21 on current generation consoles, the game felt a little incomplete. It looked like the developers had decided to tease us with a game that had a potential that it did not fully reach so when they announced that the next-gen version would be a very different experience, fans were excited. To be honest, next-gen NBA 2K21 is a magnificent game visually, the game engine exploits the power of the next-gen console to deliver stunning effect sometimes, even if we think that they can do better.

Visual Concepts has also changed the gameplay by using most of the community feedback. Additionally, new game modes are exploiting the WNBA players and that is a nice improvement to the game. The City expands on the neighbourhood and gives you a larger playground. Unfortunately, what could have been the biggest strength of the game feels a little empty after a few hours playing. Just like in the current generation version of the game, there is unexploited potential.

Next-gen NBA 2K21 is a better game especially if you add the new features exploiting the haptic controller on PlayStation 5 as well as the faster load time. However, there is still work to be done and Visual Concepts have already started releasing patches to fix some stability issues in the game.
